about
Identities commodified is one of those songs which spring from an idea to an actual finished song in time-span of one rehearsals. Usually resulting from a moment of heightened creativity after long periods of non-activity. The challenge was to capture the impact that the song has being performed live, since we recorded the album ourselves having no previous experience and knowledge in tracking and mixing. Lyrics discuss the process of re-appropriation an especially potent tool used by capitalism in the domain of signs, representations and ideology. By appropriating parts of the subcultures and incorporating them in different contexts, the anti-hegemonic power of subcultures can be diminished. What´s left of punk as a subculutre of resistance?
lyrics
No sphere left untouched, subcultures up for sale.
Alternatives to be claimed, re-appropriation soon complete.
The power of commodity is too much to bear,
You can´t be different no more by the things you wear.
Capitalism has always found new ways,
to take its opposition and turn it into a blunt blade.
Alternatives thrown into the mainstream.
Oppositional signs, just another (marketing) opportunity.
You don´t need to look hard for evidence.
See the punk fashion on runway models.
Substance gone, punk just another fashion statement.
Is this really going on?
We might have been kicked to the ground,
our mouths taped over.
But we won´t go down quietly, our efforts gone down in vain.
It is time to shut the beast down.
